Following the death of a racist white farmer, suspicions fly about the murderer's identity. Soon, elderly black man Mathu (Louis Gossett Jr.), a local sharecropper, is pegged as the prime suspect. Concerned about the threat of a lynch mob, Mathu's kind boss, Candy Marshall (Holly Hunter), gathers his friends and co-workers together to protect him. When all Mathu's fellow old men confess to the crime, it makes the investigation by Sheriff Mapes (Richard Widmark) that much trickier.

03/24/2015 Read the book seven to ten years ago. Loved it. The movie was ok for what it is. See more Frances H 11/17/2014 Very good acting, but the point here rather escaped me. I understand the idea--that standing together and changing times made a difference in how blacks would be treated in the South, but the screenplay here was not as powerful as The Biography of Miss Jane Pittman, and it meanders around quite a bit.
