You know how the original Star Wars movie is Kurosawa's "Hidden Fortress" stripped of the earthiness and made child-friendly? This film seems the inspiration for Popeye the Sailor comics. Olive Oyl already existed, but after this film Popeye and later Bluto were created . . . Spike and Salami are Bluto and Popeye, respectively. Brooks reveals the screen power that would make her a film immortal. A flawed but essential film for those interested in Brooks, Hawks and Popeye comics . . . not to mention an essential case study for Hollywoods nuetering infantilization of foreign cultural productions.
