Movie Info

Up until its surisingly mundane finale, A Lawless Street is one of the best of the Randolph Scott westerns of the 1950s. Scott plays famed marshal Calem Ware, whose strenous activities on behalf of law and order have exacted a toll on his personal life. Keeping the peace in the town of Medicine Bend, Ware hopes to someday be reconciled with his ex-wife Tally Dickinson (Angela Lansbury), now a touring musical comedy star. Just as Tally arrives in Medicine Bend, Ware is forced to deal with big-time criminals Thorne (Warner Anderson) and Clark (John Emery), not to mention their hired gun Baskam (Michael Pate). Will he do his duty and rid the town of his outlaw element, or will he hang up his guns as Tally wants him to? One of the highlights of A Lawless Street is a lively saloon-hall number performed by Angela Lansbury, who is quite a dish in her revealing stage wardrobe.

Randolph Scott was born to play this kind of cowboy role.

Scott's character uses a metaphor for the town as a wild beast which effectively sets the scene of a wild western territory uneasily trying to be more civilized.

Weren't no gunman that killed him...kit was a wild beast. A US Marshall needs to run some local bandits out of town in what will be one of his last tasks before he settles down. He battles his inner demons and past that he will need to overcome if he hopes to be successful in his mission. He works with a former flame to right some wrongs and get himself out of his mess. "You look after me like a mother hen." "Old hen." Joseph Lewis, director of The Rifleman, Gun Crazy, The Big Combo, Invisible Ghost, The Swordsman, The Undercover Man, The Silver Bullet, and Bombs over Burma, delivers A Lawless Street. The storyline for this picture is very standard and straightforward. The action and acting is just okay. The cast includes Randolph Scott, Angela Lansbury, Jean Parker, Michael Pate, and Wallace Ford. "The beast will never growl again." This was a western that was recommended to me by Verizon Fios so I gave it a shot. This was a very classic but average addition to the western genre. I wouldn't go too out of my way to see this and this is likely only worth watching for diehard western genre fans. "He said he was coming back to kill you." Grade: C

58/100. Very ordinary western, and very typical in it's day. Good color cinematography, but the art direction is fake looking and obvious, not unusual for westerns from the 50's. There wasn't much of an effort put forth on period detail either. Fine acting, Angela Lansbury's presence is a plus.
