Audience Reviews for A Chinese Odyssey, Part 2: Cinderella

The main plot following Part One (a long introduction). It looks nonsense and confusing at first seeing but actually has an elaborate structure. It requires some basic knowledge about Chinese (Buddhist) philosophy to enjoy fully. I love Stephen Chow's performance in the make-up of the Monkey, and it's kinda disappointing that it is short for us to be able to see it. Chow is really good at choosing actresses who play heroins in his films - especially good at making them look much better than their actual looking. Karen Mok shines the most when she is in Chow's films. Athena Chu looks unusually pretty in this film, too. I love the eccentric but lovable ending that has great performance without words by Chow and Chu.

The second part of Stephen Chow and Jeff Lau's epic retelling of Journey to the West picks up right where Part One left off, so obviously if you've seen the first you need to see this one too. My main issue with the second was that it gets even more complex than the first in terms of those of us not familiar enough with the source material. However with this said, plot gets focused as Joker becoming the Monkey King turns into our theme rather than general background and character introductions. Again I encountered some of the same problems as the first being a Westerner not having read Journey to the West and the subtitles leaving a bit to be desired, so thanks again to Betty for being my translator and cultural advisor while watching this one too and explaining parts to me :). Required viewing if you've seen the first to finish off the epic and classic Chow, what more could you ask for?

The storyline is excellent with many twists and dramas. It's a good sequel to the first "A chiense odyssey" movie. There are a few humors here and there. If you liked the first movie, you'd like this one too. Definately worth watching, especially if you're a fan of chinese dramas.
