Besides a few funny jokes, A Faithful Man is a non-entity with little formal interest whatsoever.
A Faithful Man shows that Garrel has promise as a filmmaker, with a knack for directing actors and a welcome sense of Gallic wit.
Although the film flirts with elements of rom-com, noir and those oh-so-French films... it never quite settles on what it wants to do before finally grinding to a halt.
Jean--Claude Carriere is a national treasure.
Interesting, but ultimately light and frothy.
It can't be overstated the simple pleasures of something that's genuine but never cringe-inducing, and light but never sugary.
There are surprises and dark rumblings in this largely light-hearted film, and Garrel shows full confidence in [Joseph Engel] to shoulder the dramatic load. The boy rewards his faith.
Garrel's second feature film as a director is as delicate and delightful as a well-whipped meringue: light, fluffy, sweet and delectable.
Garrel knows his film is a confection rather than a banquet, so keeps things moving along at a serious clip.
The writing is solid, and the cinematography is beautiful. Also, all the performances are great comedic exercises. I'm especially interested in seeing Lily-Rose Depp's career trajectory.
What sounds more like a French film festival outing than a romantic comedy centered around infidelity?
It reveals itself as neither committed New Wave subversion nor skillful homage, but rather a weak and uninspired imitation.
