Box Office Guru Wrapup: Latest Die Hard Leads Presidents' Day Weekend

Summary

The Presidents' Day holiday frame saw three films generate $20-25M in ticket sales but the action sequel A Good Day to Die Hard made enough to earn the number one spot. Comedy holdover Identity Thief dropped to second place while the new romance Safe Haven bowed in third. Overall box office was down from last year's robust holiday while Oscar contenders for Best Picture remained popular with moviegoers looking for quality cinema. Back to Article

Whatever dude. Grow up, get over yourself, and stop worshipping the ground of people who think freakin' movies are the end all of the world. It is make-believe fantasy for people wanting to escape for a few hours. I was entertained. And don't try and tell me you went and saw it and hated it . . you would just be lying, while letting others make up your mind for you.

I guess I'll take the opinion seriously of the guy who doesn't care.

So you don't really care? That's the fact? Just own it. Owe up to it. I don't care about a lot of things. I don't care about Mazda Miatas. But you know what I don't do. I don't waste my time on Motor Trend's website telling people that the thing they care about is meaningless. Try going to SI or ESPN and explain to their readers how their sports teams aren't the end-all of the world. Or, maybe if movies don't provide you with sufficient spiritual engagement, try finding something in your life that does, and spend your time on that. Maybe your children (perhaps) would appreciate your time more than your computer does.

Quite the opposite "The Watcher"- I'm with Shane on this since "Good Day To Die Hard" is a typical guy film with a solid "R" rating just for the excessive violence! Saying that the average films that do well are usually PG friendly!

"And that automatically makes it a good film?"

Well, you're just proving "King Simba" correct. You've got to admit, Twilight sucked. And most of the Transformers did too. Maybe listening to the critics ain't such a bad idea.

As for the Shane-Watcher saga (above), what the hell? What The Watcher is trying to say, Shane, is that he's interested in watching a good movie, where Die Hard clearly is not. He's simply stating facts? Shane is the only one who's making comments that are made solely from opinion, The Master uses fact.

Also, "people who think freakin' movies are the end all of the world." A: that statement doesn't make any sense as a reply to the Master's words. B:"end all of the world". Yeah, we're supposed to listen to a guy that doesn't know the difference between 'of' and 'all'? ALL OF your comments sucked and, worst OF ALL, you actually think yourself smart enough to type a rude comment on the web and get away with it...

Feb 20 - 03:52 PM

Dave J

You do know that movies are "subjective" right and that it's okay to acknowledge what critics are saying about it even though they're looking at the perspective if you get paid to watch movies all the time, and is not the same as people who hardly watch anything at all! So what you're implying is that everything you like are perfectly spot on, and that you have no 'guilty pleasures' whatsoever? Meaning that every film that you liked are rated positive including horror films, am I correct on that?

Because when films such as "The Good The Bad And The Ugly" and "It's A Wonderful Life" originally came out on movie screens- they weren't liked so much by movie critics as much as they're right now since the critics that hated it much of them are not even alive anymore!

And are you even a guy- do you even like action films that are not like the action friendly super hero films?

Feb 21 - 12:25 PM

King S.

King Simba

Dave - you're defending a guy and yet at the same time you don't seem to realize why he got all these negative responses. If he had just said that he enjoyed the film or called it a guilty pleasure I'm sure most if not all would have simply let his comment slide (don't we all have films that we liked much more than critics?) However, when he told critics to suck it and then said that anyone who hated the film was lying to himself, acting as if his opinion is fact, well that's taking things too far.

Also, critics do not think films are the end of the world. They're perfectly capable of enjoying an action spectacle if they feel it's well made. I mean just look at last year. Both Skyfall and Avengers earned better reviews than some of the films that got nominated for best picture. They didn't seem to mind at all that in it's opening sequence alone, Skyfall featured several implausible moments because as a whole they felt the film delivered.

Oh and regarding my previous comment, I was simply pointing out that I found your arguments for calling the film good pretty weak, as a film needs a lot more than a R-rating and excessive violence for it to be considered good.

Feb 21 - 03:25 PM

He was stating this as a general consenses so far since the percent of people who did see it liked it more than the critics with a scoring of 82%- not 50% or 49%!

"as a film needs a lot more than a R-rating and excessive violence for it to be considered good."

I'm just saying that their isn't many "R" rated action films for guys- that is all for Skyfall as well as the Avengers are rated PG!

No, he was saying that anyone who said hated it were lying to themselves, simple as that, which in my opinion is something really immature to say.
