Playing It Cool (2015)

Critic Consensus: Playing It Cool pits Chris Evans and Michelle Monaghan's easy chemistry against a screenplay that tries too hard to be quirky and clever, and the results are disappointingly lukewarm.

Movie Info

While pretending to be a philanthropist at a charity dinner, the man meets a gorgeous woman named HER (Monaghan). The only catch: she's engaged. In order to continue seeing each other, the two embark on a platonic relationship, one that gets pushed to the test as the two begin to realize they may have unrequited feelings for one another. Like a young Walter Mitty, ME uses the power of imagination and wild vignettes to conquer HER heart.

Screenwriters Chris Shafer and Paul Vicknair's script feels like a first draft that was written in one night as they got pumped up on Red Bull and speed-watched Netflix.

Proceeding with a strained quirkiness that infects much more than the names of its main characters, this first feature by Justin Reardon is a paean to the kind of narcissism that sucks the air out of every scene.

A broad romantic comedy that submits the genre to such a rigorous self-examination it nearly tips over into parody - which would have been a good thing.

Audience Reviews for Playing It Cool

Such an under-rated movie. Amazing cast, on point story and engaging despite the predictable rom-com tone (playing it ironically on the lead's job). How in God's holly vag is this movie rated %16 here while Zoolander 2 is at 24%? Politics I tell ya.

I had low expectations but was very pleasantly surprised about this movie; it was VERY entertaining. I'm glad I didn't read the reviews before watching it. The banter between the characters is very funny and I don't understand the critics who said there was no chemistry between the two leads. The Aubrey Plaza and Topher Grace characters are a great bonus and I thought the fantasy sequences did a great job of making it more interesting when the plot started to look predictable.

Chris Evans's character is a beat down writer failing at composing a romantic comedy script without clichés when Playing It Cool is nothing but clichés and is in fact a terrible rom-com. If the story has a glimpse of hope, the actors and direction take it down the path of hopelessness.
