McFarlane's movie does have at least one classic moment that will appeal to Generation Xers and the most undignified duel ever, but it doesn't have much sardonic resonance.

There are quite possibly a million reasons why Seth MacFarlane's second movie A Millions Ways to Die in the West is not a good movie, but you only need one: it's not funny.

MacFarlane's signature song-and-dance routines and nicely placed cameos win out over the arguable faults.

A Million Ways to Die in the West is an awkwardly paced, overly long, and wildly uneven film.

Surface laughs will only carry you so far, and there has to be something more substantial in a movie this long, but there isn't anything.

While it does suffer from the old syndrome of most of the funny parts being in the trailer, there are still plenty of funny jokes that weren't. Unfortunately, there still aren't enough funny jokes to fill the movie's runtime.

It equally offended and bored me.

Even if I was drunk or high it would have been stupid and boring.

Overall, A Million Ways to Die in the West is entertaining and funny, and it is great to see [Seth] MacFarlane in a live-action role.

It would be easier to shrug off writer/director/actor/egomaniac Seth McFarlane's blatant racism and misogyny if he was funny or had a point. Alas, he isn't and he doesn't.

The best stuff is when McFarlane plays up the rag-tangled daftness of the genre, which is perhaps why comparisons to Mel Brooks may not be entirely defunct.

Good idea, indeed, but the lazy writing resorts to tiresome clichés, thinly-sketched characters, gags that for the most part miss their mark, sloppy narrative and a script in which most lines feature the F-word and derivatives thereof.

This is like watching a mediocre episode of "Family Guy" that is four times longer and much cruder.

There are hilarious things within A Million Ways to Die in the West, there are cringe-worthy things, and there are many elements in between.
November 27, 2018
The problem with the film is that Seth MacFarlane (the director) has been tasked with making a leading man out of Seth MacFarlane (the actor).

Despite all of the obvious flaws, I did find myself caught up thanks to MacFarlane and Theron's chemistry, and there were just enough genuine laughs to keep me entertained.

August 17, 2017
The problem is that this story and all its supposed shock value is just plain boring.

A Million Ways to Die's endless parade of toots undermines its actors. The writing also manages to find less-scatological ways to disrespect women and minorities.
July 7, 2017
The movie has more respect and affection for the Old West (and old western movies) than I imagined it could. The Oscar stint and Ted remain unforgiven, but I'm willing to look at whatever MacFarlane does next.
