A Private War serves as a potent reminder of the effort expended by correspondents to illuminate, inform and bear witness to man-made catastrophes.

A Private War is a piercing plea championing empathy, asking us to not turn a blind eye to the abject suffering of countless faceless civilians.

Pike certainly looks and acts the part, even if the depiction of the journalist's trade tends towards the cliched.

The film is an inspiring tribute to a significant figure in journalism.

Heineman is far better off letting Pike's unforced charisma and sense of purpose carry the day.

Matthew Heineman is a documentary filmmaker and his A Private War is a sturdy chronicle of Colvin's fearless life of speaking truth to power, only to be admired because of the unthinkable risks she herself took in order to do so.

A better encapsulation of the dangers of speaking up, and the equally pressing need to, could not be imagined.

It's a part that almost instinctively you feel Pike wouldn't be right for...and yet she rises to every one of its many considerable challenges, cleverly avoiding the potential for overplaying at every impressive turn. And what potential there is.

Between the eye-patch, American drawl and chain-smoking rakishness, Colvin is a real-life gun-slinger who befits a big-screen portrait.

It has a raw and uneasy power, one that resists the clunky screenplay's many attempts to reduce Colvin to a series of easy-to-understand psychoanalytic bullet points. Pike's brusque, ravaged performance helps.

At a time when pressured media budgets are conspiring, with the general preference for escapism over reality, to threaten war reporting's very existence, A Private War unflinchingly reminds us of its value.

[An] impassioned if occasionally contrived drama...

This is Pike's film, and her dedication and grit are to be commended. If only she'd been given a little bit more to work with.

Heineman highlights the danger she endured, too, and the result is both a powerful psychological portrait and a fitting tribute.

Pike acts as if her life depends on it with an unflinching portrait of gradual physical and mental decline.

A Private War, while not an easy watch, is worth seeing, mainly for Pike's swaggering performance...

I can only say, with confidence, that the film features a magnificently fierce, alert and impassioned performance from Rosamund Pike, whose usual English rose delicacy is nowhere to be seen. It is top work, properly.

Packed with fascinating observations on how journalism has changed and how it has stayed the same.

Pike gives a thoroughly convincing performance as Colvin... As drama, though, it is two-dimensional. The filmmakers are so focused on Colvin that they don't seem to notice anything else.

The director Matthew Heineman has a background in documentary, and Pike serves as a one-woman answer to the question of why he didn't make a factual piece: her tenacity, swagger and depth are astonishing.
