Hornby's crises and characters can be so facile, schematic and smugly moralistic that emotional substance can get overshadowed by fluff.

You can't help but shake the feeling that you were having more fun with the old, sarcastic, lying Will.

If the film has anything going for it, it's Nicholas Hoult's marvelous performance as the young boy.

Like its lead character, About a Boy exists in a stale vacuum of time-killing routine.

The film's major setback is that it's not as interesting as the characters are.

The characters want to live and breathe, but the filmmakers keep trying to smooth off their edges.

Was this spiritless stuff really directed by Paul and Chris Weitz, of American Pie fame? How the rebels have mellowed!

Since the central odd couple have no rapport, their bond never seems to progress past mutual usury.

Though ultimately derailed by an underdeveloped romance and an overly sappy ending, About a Boy shows signs that the Weitz brothers are near cinematic adulthood.

Pleasant and engaging, rather than laugh-out-loud funny or emotionally involving.

Grant's puckishness has become overly packaged; what's new about him here is his spiky hairdo. This movie is built on an actor as well as a character who is too intent to be on his best behavior.

If the story gets dangerously thin, Grant is pretty well flawless. And Collette, always good, is heartbreakingly believable.

Thankfully, this film is grounded and has a firm sense of reality and is consequently more affecting for it.

Refreshingly short on cuteness and remarkably alert to the problems inherent in adapting a much-loved novel to the screen.

Will is alarmingly shallow, as if the American Psycho possessed Hugh Grant.

Hugh Grant, who has a good line in charm, has never been more charming than in About a Boy.

Using a stock plot, About a Boy injects just enough freshness into the proceedings to provide an enjoyable 100 minutes in a movie theater.
