Amazingly, this is Ryan's first lead role in a feature film, and although the sparse Abundant Acreage doesn't always rise to her level, her understated but powerful performance brings the story to life - even in the dead of winter.

Each of the five superb actors gets a moment of dramatic glory out of Mr. MacLachlan's screenplay, which is about guilt, roots and the selfishness of implacable conviction. Each makes the most of it.

Only on the big screen are we able to fully appreciate the minutely detailed nature of Ryan's performance, revealing Tracy's soul via the slightest narrowing of the eyes or the almost-subliminal tensing of her cheekbones.
