Movie Info

Reporter Toby Prentiss (Tracy) drunkenly sleeps through an earthquake, so his angry editor (Harvey) assigns him to the advice to the lovelorn column. Resentful, Toby deliberately offers outrageous advice in hopes that he'll be fired, but the column becomes popular. Toby's lies to his fiancee Louise (Blane) are found out, and she dumps him in favor of another man. Kranz (Gordon), who runs a discount drugstore chain, pays Toby a handsome sum to recommend Kranz products in the column and Toby buys Louise a ring, initially to no avail. However, his reply to Louise's "Miss Lonelyhearts" letter brings them back together, so they dine with his mother (Adair) to celebrate. When his mother falls ill, instead of going to the drugstore the doctor recommends, Toby buys one of Kranz's products. Because Kranz' products are dangerous, Toby's mother dies, but the courts can do nothing--so Toby attacks Kranz in his column as well as in a news story under his own byline. Kranz tries to have Toby killed, but he evades the hit men, and Kranz is arrested; Toby and Louise are married.
