Jay C @Jaycar Apr 10 Very engaging story. In my opinion, I just thought the casting for Haley was wrong. The actor that played her is clearly not mixed. So not believable that she is Ellen's daughter. Just not buying it. She us 100% black American, not mixed. The characters feel fully lived-in, flawed, and complex, the writing is beautifully subtle and never panders to or "spoon-feeds" the audience, and the locations, lighting, cinematography, and direction give the film a real sense of place, as though we were right there with them. In a sea of tired sequels and half-baked blockbusters, you won’t want to miss this thoughtful, heart-tugging jewel of a movie. It’s a beautifully written and gorgeously shot story about three generations of ladies haunted by the spectre of domestic violence, mental illness, and substance abuse. Erika Christensen (Ellen Sharpe), Penelope Ann Miller (Verna Sharpe), and Kiara Muhammad (Haley Sharpe) are all forces to be reckoned with in their own right, showcasing a stubbornly strong streak that is only alive in the women of this family. The film being based on a personal story plus the astounding performances give you something heartfelt and real to hold on to, long after the film is over. It doesn’t try to be more than what it is: a sweet and sorrowful tale of three disparate souls finding their way back to each other. A reminder that tragedy can bring us home and make us whole again. See more Matty D @RT77792348 Oct 29 Saw this in NYC a few weeks ago. The film is a beautiful portrayal of how family can come together in the face of trauma, hurt and years of obstacles. The lead actors, all 3 of them, give unique and evocative performances. Erika Christensen shows incredible range being able to communicate so much through her face and eyes, Penelope Ann Miller is able to straddle drama and comedy with masterful nuance and there is also a breakout performance by Kiara Muhammad who I'm sure will be in many more movies, in the coming years. The cherry on top is Director Kerstin Karlhuber, whose filming lets the actors breathe and show their emotional layers. Visually there is incredible attention to detail which is most evident in the searing flashback sequences. All together, these parts make the film a must see, especially now, when Dramas are few and far between! See more Read all reviews
