After Earth is a dull, ploddingly paced exercise in sentimental sci-fi -- and the latest setback for director M. Night Shyamalan's once-promising career. Read critic reviews

Preachy, draggingly directed by M Night Shyamalan and just not much fun.

After Earth unfortunately still finds M. Night Shyamalan plodding through another dull, lifeless movie.

The effects are second-hand stuff from Alien and Star Trek, spliced with Shyamalan's regular homilies on Personal Growth.

As drama, After Earth offers no surprises; as action, it's rarely stimulating; as a parenting manual, it seems that Will has thrown Jaden into water that's a little too deep.

After Earth is dragged down by, yes, Will Smith's apparent desire to share his boring concerns about parenthood with a blameless audience.

The problem is that the film is chockful of clichés and stymied by production design and CG effects that look as if the worst of the Star Wars series was being devoutly copied.

Jun 22, 2016What was a pretty cool idea from M. Night Shyamalan, became Will Smith's vehicle to give his son an "I Am Legend" type film. Was supposed to convey struggle but then strong bond between father and son really got lost in translation of sci-fi action and you really can't dig your way out of it by the end. Good special effects though. Jaden Smith is definitely not on the same level of his father as far as acting talent is concerned.Patrick W Super Reviewer

Jul 30, 2015When the spaceship carrying Kitai(Jaden Smith) and his father Cypher(Will Smith) crashes, they are the only survivors. To make matters worse, the emergency beacon is in the other half of the spaceship, several days hike across a hazardous planet full of things that want to eat them. That becomes increasingly necessary considering Cypher suffered a compound fracture in the crash which even 30th century medicine has no quick fix for. And that big alien thingie they were giving a ride to might still be alive and waiting for Kitai out there. Even if "The 100" had not cornered the market on post-apocalyptic generational and parental issues, there would still be little reason to recommend "After Earth." That's how heavily contrived and predictable it is. Yes, yes, we get it. Kitai really needs to prove himself to his father. But at the same time, you don't have to travel half way across the galaxy to find an emotionally remote father. All of which makes for a waste of perfectly fine production design.Walter M Super Reviewer

Sep 02, 2014Not as bad as many who made out it was. There are certain sci-fi elements within this film I thought worked well along with the visual approach and effort. However this particular film is not without its incredible flaws; hardly enough drama compensate dull storytelling and unlikable characters, not even enough conveniences within the plot points redeem the film much. Overall this is a mediocre film worth watching only for its action, effects, and visual appeal.Luke E Super Reviewer

General Cypher Raige: | Danger is very real but fear is a choice. |
General Cypher Raige: | Fear is not real. The only place that fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is a product of our imagination, causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist. |
General Cypher Raige: | Do you know where we are? |
Kitai Raige: | No, sir. |
