There's little to distract one from this drab literary adaptation's ponderous pace and washed out palette - even the great Dane himself.

We might laugh, but Mikkelsen is so moody and magnificent we take him very seriously. That's part of the problem. Mikkelsen is too cool, too brooding and we never get behind his icy mask.

Medieval mumblecore. And social conflict as secondary to the scenery in this dramatic momentum-free travelogue, a treat solely for arty snobs and couch potato political dilettantes. Poverty porn as high art, and most memorable, a pregnant horse in labor.

Cloddy period stodge.

Succeeds neither as a decent adaptation of the book nor as a rewarding movie in its own right ... Dullness prevails.
May 29, 2013
A brutally tedious, interminably long costume drama that errantly wastes a fleet of talented actors.

...shorn of some interesting subplots and themes...that get lost in the translation of events from Germany to France, as the film progresses the anti-dramatic choices it makes start to feel less like restraint and more like lack of inspiration.
