There's little to distract one from this drab literary adaptation's ponderous pace and washed out palette - even the great Dane himself.

The film is not without merit, although it remains too much of a slow-burn to really catch fire as the gritty, medieval Euro western its set up promises.

We might laugh, but Mikkelsen is so moody and magnificent we take him very seriously. That's part of the problem. Mikkelsen is too cool, too brooding and we never get behind his icy mask.

Arnaud des Pallières's dreary French costume drama might have been called Robin Hood And His Very Un-Merry Men.

The film is almost monotonously somber, though not in a bad way -- when it erupts into violence or settles briefly into moments of intimacy, the shift in tone can be surprising, even invigorating.

It can be quite powerful on the rare occasions when it allows raw emotion to make its way to the surface.

Des Pallires also hears his historical era: the richly detailed sound design, of jostles and clanks and wind, compensates partially for the film's often deliberate pace.

Silly critics expected "Braveheart" when it was more like Ingmar Bergman's "Virgin Spring". Ignore the shallow minds; this is a serious art film worthy of your attention if you have an IQ over 80.

Medieval mumblecore. And social conflict as secondary to the scenery in this dramatic momentum-free travelogue, a treat solely for arty snobs and couch potato political dilettantes. Poverty porn as high art, and most memorable, a pregnant horse in labor.

It's a strong story of lonely, even futile righteousness, which makes the plodding execution by director Arnaud des Palliers somewhat mystifying.

Come to it with a certain moviegoing flexibility, and the effort will expose a wealth of technical triumphs and emotional substance.

This muted approach robs the film of sorely needed momentum, but offers a rare opportunity for contemplation, a trade-off that only occasionally satisfies.

A little dull, but beautifully shot and acted.

Greatly cognizant of the revenge genre's penchant for hypocritical demagoguery, director Arnaud des Pallires unsettles the audience's usual feelings of vicarious blood lust.

Mikkelsen is fine in the role, bringing to the part the gravitas and dogged persistence required.
