Singapore, 1994: Ah Girl is a precocious 7-year-old just starting primary school. Since her parents separated, she lives in a small flat with her boyish younger sister, Ah Tian (5), her taciturn Dad who works night shifts, and her irritable Grandmother who is in charge of the kids. The kids see their needy and unreliable Mum on weekends when she spoils them with food and toys. One night, Mum asks Ah Girl to choose to live with her, and although she wants to please Mum, Ah Girl struggles with this huge decision. She will have to leave her father and sister once Mum gets a new house. Ah Girl becomes increasingly aware that her family life is not normal, and feels out of place at school. Over the course of the year, life continues for this fragmented family: Mum and Dad start new relationships; Ah Girl has fun and gets into trouble; it seems that Ah Tian might go and live elsewhere; accidents happen, money is tight; there are good times and sad times -- but the weight of what will happen in the future hangs over all of them, especially Ah Girl. We journey with Ah Girl, navigating the confusing world of adults as she’s forced to grow up far too quickly.
