Movie Info

The Greek Cypriot writer-director Panicos Chrysanthou's picture Akamas weaves the tale of a cross-cultural, interracial romance between a Turkish man and a Greek woman, as it unfolds over the course of Cyprus's communal fighting during the mid fifties. Christopher Grego is Omeris, a young man of Turkish origin who came of age in Cyprus, surrounded by a Greek populace. He grew up in a progressive home, the belief instilled in him from an early age that men and women have no inherent internal superiority or inferiority to one another, despite external racial differences. As time rolls on, however, Omeris falls deeply in love with Rhodou (Agni Tsangaridou), a local woman of Greek extraction - a development that turns his world upside down and challenges many of his presuppositions. Most troubling is his discovery that what much of the world takes for granted - the idea of meeting the right person and developing a healthy, stable relationship - is, in his case, challenged and potentially thwarted by everyone around him who clings to extremist prejudicial attitudes about race and tries to destroy his romance with Rhodou. Infuriated by the content of this film, Greek Cypriot government cautioned Chrysanthou to pull his feature from the 2006 Venice Film Festival; the director adamantly refused. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
