Alita's visuals, exciting action and world mythology do just enough to satisfy and (perhaps) encourage a sequel. [Full review in Spanish]

The closest thing to a live-action anime ever made, Alita: Batttle Angel is a dazzling assertion of cinematic ambition.

One wishes...that Alita's tale were able to rise above muddled storytelling and intermittently great action sequences. It all feels like too much setup, too much exposition, too much world-building.

The screenplay's weaknesses are overlooked by the film's astounding spectacles, most notably the Motorball scene.

Lack of originality notwithstanding, Alita still delivers an engaging experience thanks to Rodriguez's nimble and full-throttle direction.

Alita is powered by James Cameron's visionary world-building. But the last thing you want to use to sell something is "written by James Cameron".

You can't knock Cameron or Rodriguez for pushing the technology forward, even if "Alita" ends up playing like it was made from scrapped parts of better films.

I'm sure fans of the source material will nitpik and find fault with everything but as someone who doesn't have any preconceived notions I loved this film. This is the first great movie of 2019.

We've got a good time at the movies here, but a screenplay that was ruthlessly trimmed could have made it great.
February 17, 2019
The canvas is colourful and detailed, the characters likable but after a promising first act, the film gets bogged down in world building, punctuated by setpiece fights that advance the story not one inch.
February 16, 2019
Not only the first Manga film adaptation that doesn't suck, but it's just a fun time at the movies overall.

It's goofy as hell and borderline inexcusable at times, but it's also kind of glorious.
February 16, 2019
Skepticism aside, the movie works to a point. Alita spellbinds with her wide, expressive eyes, break-neck moves--the fight sequences are refreshingly unpredictable--as well as her tenaciousness.
