Movie Info

A portrait of the singer as he recounts his Montreal childhood, his New York breakthrough, and his subsequent successes worldwide. Openly gay, Rufus provides a frank and revealing look at his life, including his going temporarily blind from drug problems. With comments by his sister and his mother, musicians Elton John, Sting, Neil Tennant ("Pet Shop Boys"), Tom ?? ("Keane"), and showcasing his talents on solo piano as well as with his band, this is a fascinating film.

A fascinating documentary on singer & songwriter Rufus Wainwright, interspersed with acoustic performances from Rufus' first four albums. The story of Rufus' early "bursting out of the closet", his friendship with straight friend Teddy Thompson, and his unusual and dysfunctional family is compelling. His rise to fame, and subsequent crash (drug addition and initial commercial failure with the now considered classic second album, Poses) is equally interesting, as are the stories behind the songs. There are good contributions from best friend Jane Adams and fellow musicians Elton John , Jake Shears and Tom Chaplin, and the "unplugged" songs are breathtaking.
