Even with a mere 90-minute runtime, the movie is entirely too slow.

It has plenty of problems but delivers well on its central premise and a must for those with an interest in the history of the genre.

Funny and self-aware about the ridiculous contrivances of its genre, and it's also straight-faced in treating the threat of that impossible crocodilian as a real problem.

Alligator is a wonderfully entertaining monster flick that will continuously deliver the fun no matter how many times you watch it.

Dumb as it is, director Lewis Teague brings some plusses to the pic. Robert Forster, as a detective, and Riker are amiable leads, never taking the film too seriously. Tech credits are cheap but serviceable.

Lewis Teague is only too willing to hand over the entire project to Sayles's hunger for allegorical subplots.

Clever, funny, and wonderfully bloody

The result is an effective and unpretentious treat.

John Sayles' screenplay mixes monster flick mayhem with a whole lot of wit.
