With their father lost in anger and self-loathing, "Truck" Wheeler has raised his younger brother Ted as best as he could, considering he's just a teenager himself. In return, Ted idolizes his brother. Now, during their one year of high school together, Ted will realize there are troubling aspects to Truck and his party-hardy gang, "The Kings." ★★★ (out of four) Based on the book of the same name by Max Doty, this disturbing take on adolescent angst doesn't really add anything knew to the genre, but it does manage to create characters that are real and the pain they go through is devestatingly uncomfortable. In a small rural California town, Ted (Lorenzo James Henrie) looks up to his older brother, nicknamed Truck (Alex Frost)and his wild friends. They reluctantly let him hang out with them. Finally they allow him to participate in a game they have created. They guy who can sleep with the most freshman girls wins. The plot sounds a little like a big Hollywood teen comedy, but this is anything but that. It a film with serious consequences for the kids involved and the pain that spreads around the group is handled fervently.
