Movie Info

Based on the famous Bengali novel 'Kinnar Dal' by the late Bibhuti Bhusan Bandopadhyay (writer of Pather Panchali stories adapted by Satyajit Ray), Tarun Majumder's film 'Ray of Hope (Aalo)' is set in 1950s rural Bengal immediately after India gained independence. Aalo (present Bengali star actress Rituparna Sengupta) is a city-bred woman from an educated, well-to-do family who moves to rural Bengal upon marriage. Here, she encounters a dramatic difference in the approach to life, gender equality and material possessions. In particular, Aalo is moved to respond to the internalized prejudice and self-deprecating cruelty she encounters among the women in the community and resolves to challenge some of their archaic beliefs. The film is scored with numerous songs by the great Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore.
