Along Came a Spider Reviews

October 3, 2002
Freeman, as always, is a still center of dependable calm and intelligence, but Potter registers only as another generic blonde.
September 26, 2002
Even at half speed, Freeman excels: He knows how to whip out his badge at a crime scene and make it seem as if he had been doing it his whole life.

There are popcorn movies, and then there are movies like this one, which, by its conclusion, make you want to toss your empty popcorn bag at the screen.

Like a paperback plucked from a counter at an airport, Spider is an impulse buy of a film, a time killer that will neither tax your brain nor challenge your memory.

Gets tangled in its own web of absurdities.

Taken at face value, the film is entertaining, exciting at times and fun to watch.

From the very beginning of the movie, irritating implausibilities speckle Mark Moss' script.

If you tend to really analyze thrillers, and then get bugged when there are gaps in logic, save yourself the aggravation.
April 6, 2001
No matter how average the script, the direction or the company, any movie that stars Freeman is worth two hours and nearly 10 bucks.

Wears the one-size-fits-all jumpsuit of a hundred forgettable crime capers.
April 6, 2001
It may be chock-full of psychological elements, but it's neither suspenseful nor thrilling.

Man, are you gonna be talking when you come out of this movie! Saying things like 'but why...' and 'if she...' and 'wouldn't he...' and 'how come...' as you try to trace your way back through the twisted logic of the plot.

April 6, 2001
Along Came a Spider is efficient, but in the end quite pedestrian.
April 5, 2001
Freeman's performance -- one of laserlike perspicacity shining through eyes made narrow by a laconic, been-there-done-that cool -- is the film's ramrod-true spine.

Detective yarns should be tauter than this slack affair.
April 5, 2001
On some level, nearly every thriller asks viewers to suspend their disbelief. Along Came a Spider expects you to kick yours in the nuts, break both its legs, and not make hospital visits. You can't even send flowers.
April 5, 2001
Potter doesn't resemble a Secret Service agent in any significant way, but so little in this movie rings true that it hardly matters.
April 5, 2001
Anyone with any knowledge of police procedure will have to start suspending disbelief in a big way.
April 5, 2001
A mediocre widget stamped straight out of the mold of the popular police procedural, the kind featuring a master detective.
