Everything about this is a dark after school special. The sad part, I read the accounts of what really happened to the girl, and the writers and directors made this soft for the audience. At the end, they say the primary suspect took responsibility for her actions, really- she told the parole board she couldn't remember her involvement due to drugs, but takes responsibility even though she doesn't remember. Sounds like Parole Board b.s. to get out. What a disjustice this movie did the victim by not portraying the real actions of the neighbors, and diminishing the victims torture.

This movie was chilling and terrifying. It details the story of Sylvia Linkens, and her gut wrenching story. It pierced my soul as it carefully details the true human nature and Lord Of the Flies mentality within a household. It doesn't hold back, taking many risks and showing the extent of the torture Sylvia received. It payed homage to the girl who never got to tell her story. And the acting was amazing.

A very disturbing film that is based on a real life murder. Uncomfortable to watch, but well-made with solid acting. (First and only viewing - 1/20/2019)

Scary movie based on a real thrilling story that took place in Indianapolis in 1960s. The main problem is what triggered all this madness which resulted in such a tragic end.

Dude WHAT THE FUCK. everything in this movie is so negative. damn! Like every single interaction from the very very beginning to the end. And yes, I know it is supposed to to be a messed up movie about abuse with the ï¿ 1/2 1/2lady keeper ï¿ 1/2 1/2 but even the beginning was so disgusting ugh. Like every thing about this movie made be so mad OTHER THAN THE CHILD ABUSE. Maybe thatï¿ 1/2 1/2(TM)s what they were going for? To make the whole movie fucking disgusting? Welp, ya did it.

Pure crap. Horrible storytelling (or lack thereof). No backstories on the characters, especially Gertie and what made her so violent to only one girl and none of the other kids. WHY was Franco even in this? He adds absolutely nothing to the story or movie. Acting was very subpar. A shell of a story and movie.

Great movie, but this movie doesn't show all the pain she went through

I've seen Salo or 120 days of sodom, a serbian film, martyrs, etc. but this is the most disturbing movie I've seen so far.

Great. Great acting, important story. Makes me think of old lifetime movies, but way better and bigger. Great movie.

uma história tão sombria e cheia de meandros quanto essa merecia ter sido infinitamente melhor tratada. sobretudo por ser baseada em fatos reais.

Saw two versions of this horrific true story and started the book.

There are scenes in this movie that are very unsettling to watch, but despite the level of intensity of these scenes, there aren't enough of them. This is a movie about Gertrude when it should really be about Sylvia and the torture she suffered. People don't want to see this movie because of a weird half-romance between Catherine Keener and James Franco, they want to see it because they want to see events how they happened. This movie makes no mention of the scalding baths they forced Sylvia into, or making her eat her own crap, and little is shown of the daily beatings Sylvia suffered at the hands of Gertrude, her children and the neighborhood kids. this movie could have been one of the most incredible and disturbing movies this century. there are some great performances by Ellen Page and Catherine Keener, but the focus is in the wrong place, and as such, suffers because of it.

I give the situation and acting get the credit here but the overall film is just a brushover.

Not the best movie ever, still Ellen's performance is really good.

A story about incredible cruelty. Not for the faint of heart.

Lifetime presents: An American Crime: The Sylvia Likens Story. (Or at the very least that's how it's presented. I'm sure there's a better movie to be made about this horrifying real life story, but you won't find it here. Good performances by Page and Keener though.)

Awesome movie & very sad movie! Probably one of the movies that unfortunately was based on a true story; that shed a lot of light on child abuse.
