American Troll is the bold new film from Polish-Canadian director Saturnin. This gripping documentary dives into one of the most controversial freedom of speech cases in Canadian history. When comedian Mike Ward made a joke about Jeremy Gabriel--a young singer with a disability--it ignited a decade-long legal battle that climbed all the way to the Supreme Court. Provocative, unflinching, and darkly humorous, American Troll explores the cost of standing your ground. In the face of relentless adversity, it reveals how conviction can lead not only to personal growth, but also to public backlash, online cruelty, personal struggles, and very expensive lawyer bills.

Overall, American Troll feel like listening to comedians complain that nobody understands how hard it is to be allowed to say whatever you want while people are also allowed to hate you for saying it. Go to Full Review

Perhaps if these comedians spent less time complaining about being offended and more time crafting genuinely funny material, they might discover that comedy is doing just fine. Go to Full Review

In many ways, American Troll is one man’s gain reciprocated into pain for the other. The director brings both points of view to the forefront and stays neutral, or at least attempts to do that with the limited amount of material he has at his disposal. Go to Full Review
