Colby S @ColbySchoetz Jul 20 Lekh Tandon’s 1966 visually ravishing historical epic features an all time great performance by Vyjayanthimala as the titular courtesan. The dance sequences are stunning but where the film really comes to be is its devotion to Amrapali’s life story. We witness her rise into respect as a courtesan as well as how she has her respect stripped from her by the hands of the systematic power of a Kshatriya man. The way the film portrays higher caste men using their social status to their advantage over women even going as far to destroy their lives out of a one sided love. Obsession runs deep and the high class get off too easy the majority of the time with “obsession” and faux love as an excuse. I was very glad and surprised to see a film of the time brave enough to depict a woman denying a man despite his status. See more Read all reviews
