Movie Info

In their mid-30s, Eva (Oona Chaplin) and Kat (Natalia Tena) have a fun and carefree simple life in their London canal boat until Eva, inspired by her exceptional mother Germaine (played by her real mother Geraldine Chaplin), presents Kat with an ultimatum: she wants a child. Kat resists, knowing that it will end the bohemian lifestyle that she's always envisioned with Eva. When Kat's best friend, Roger (David Verdaguer), drops in from Barcelona, the three of them toy around with the idea of creating a baby together. Kat sees no other way out but to say yes. As the three begin to look forward as one family, their differing expectations of intimacy and responsibility put a heavy strain on their relationship and threatens to rip the three apart.

  • A magnetic journey that reconfirms that cinema is nothing more than a reflection of real life. [Full Review in Spanish]

  • Don't get sold into the light-hearted, bittersweet, sugar-coated casing of this film. David Verdaguer's scene-stealing performance simply can't save Anchor and Hope from its archaic representation of women. Who let this be made?

    February 21, 2019 | Rating: 2/5 | Full Review…
  • Where Anchor and Hope badly misfires is in the assumptions it makes about what women want, and how women get it.

    January 10, 2019 | Full Review…
  • The story of a lesbian couple trying to have a baby is well-executed on nearly every front.

    November 15, 2018 | Full Review…
  • A good cast and novel setting is wasted on this tired and slow gay "having a baby" romance that lacks the warmth or wit to draw us in.

    November 14, 2018 | Rating: 2/4 | Full Review…
  • Too often, viewers just have to take a movie love story's word for it that its characters actually belong together. Not so in Carlos Marques-Marcet's loose, observant Anchor and Hope.
