Movie Info

Angel is the fateful love story between Thierry, a world famous cyclist, who meets Fae, a sex worker, on his holiday in Senegal. Unlike many of the western men on holiday there, Thierry has no intention of exploring the sex-trade. But he and Fae encounter each other with the force of a coup de foudre: these two whose bodies are their work find in each other the redemptive love they seek. But the complications of Thierry's past as a disgraced athlete and Fae's refusal to register with the authorities so as not to define her life, may not allow the dream they enter to be realized. Angel explores this story with intoxicating sensuality taking us into the present and past of these fated characters.

  • Where a lesser film could unravel in favour of a portrait of extremes, Angel maintains an authenticity which transcends place and status.

  • Flemish director Koen Mortier's latest film... [uses] flashbacks (which are sometimes confusing) to flesh out the two main characters' backstories.

  • This moody, gorgeously crafted portrait of two disparate souls who tryst with each other one fateful night, is a hypnotic ode to damaged people looking for a night of consoling.

  • The prurient humor is underscored by the racial, economic, and political ramifications of such an illicit fraternization, here re-designed in all its sobering, formal probability.

  • Fae's titular Ange may be who we begin and end the film with, but Thierry's more pedestrian issues are unfortunately where the film's heart ultimately lies.
