Antarctica (Nankyoku Monogatari) Photos

Movie Info

Somewhat reminiscent of The Incredible Journey and Milo and Otis -- though much harsher in its approach -- Antarctica focusses in on a team of sled dogs, owned by a team of snowbound Japanese researchers. A relief team is long overdue, forcing the dogs to fend for themselves. Eight of the dogs break free from their chains, roaming the Antarctic wastes in search of food and shelter. Only two of the dogs survive the ordeal, indication enough that this film is not specifically designed for the family trade. Based on a true story, Antarctica was a box-office smash in Japan, though this success was not repeated when the film was distributed internationally. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

As a kid, we had a dog named Jiro, after one of the dog in this film. I kept found memories of this for over 20 years and I finally got to watch it again. Im not sure it aged that well, but the documentary-style makes it that much more realistic and touching. A beautiful film about trying to survive against the elements of the Earth.

True-life drama that plays like a documentary except the camera crew couldn't have been there all about an aborted 1950's Japanese expedition to the South Pole and what happens to the husky dogs they leave behind chained together. It starts off slow, focusing on the men, but gets increasingly gripping as it moves to the dogs. Desperately sad too with a great soundtrack by Vangelis if you can hear it while you're snuffling into a hanky. Postcript. If you visit Japan now, you can go see two of the dogs, stuffed. <img src="">
