Pour elle (Anything for Her)

Critics Consensus

This taut and snappy French prison break thriller may be suspiciously implausible, but is held together by two fine central performances.

Movie Info

With a loving, stable marriage of many years, a devoted son named Oscar (Lancelot Roch) and a quiet life in suburban France, life feels supremely happy for French couple Julien (Vincent Lindon) and Lisa (Diane Kruger). The household is shaken to its core, then, when an unthinkable series of events befalls the family: the police suddenly turn up and inexplicably arrest Lisa for a murder of which she appears to have no knowledge. She receives a sentence of twenty years in prison, but Julien remains convinced of her innocence - and unwilling to endure the time it will take to sort through French bureaucracy and obtain an appeal. Reeling in turmoil, Julien grows so distraught that he resorts to a desperate plan of action by deciding to spring Lisa from confinement.

While driving around Paris with a bloodied body in his back seat, Julien(Vincent Lindon), a university professor, thinks back on happier times like him and his beautiful wife Lisa(Diane Kruger) going at it like rabbits, even with the infant son they have. That all changes when Lisa is convicted of killing her boss. Fearing that she cannot survive prison for long, Julien gets desperate thoughts in what he can do to help. "Pour Elle" is a Hollywood-style thriller about the crazy things we do for love that of course Hollywood screwed up when it turned it into "The Next Three Days" by taking the former's elegant shorthand and turning it into the latter's drawn out longhand. Plus, I'll take the more vulnerable and expressive Vincent Lindon over Russell Crowe. Granted, "Pour Elle" still is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, as it suffers from a daft plot and a mismatched couple. But it moves so quickly that it does not really allow the audience to ask many questions along the way.

A really gripping thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Gripping, fast-paced and moving drama/thriller where an "ordinary" man is faced with extraordinary and seemingly insurmountable difficulties. There's an edge of realism here that keeps everything small-scale even amidst the high concept. Excellent performances from Vincent Lindon and Diane Kruger and kinetic direction from Fred Cavayé. Remade as the American blockbuster "The Next Three Days" starring Russell Crowe (therefore instantly missing the point of the 'everyman' factor).

I can't help wondering why Hollywood chose to remake this average thriller. Maybe running out of concepts? However, others might find this movie outstanding since I felt it was an ordinary one (in the near past, Winter's Bone and The Town were such movies which were great according to most people, but I found 'em mediocre. I lack the sense of appreciating certain qualities and my ignorance doesn't let me enjoy 'em as much as others can). Check it out; maybe you're blessed with the talent of discovering greatness in what I find to be quite an ordinary work.
