Movie Info

Plagued by alcoholism and having relinquished custody of her two young sons in a messy divorce, a veteran actress attempts to reconnect with her estranged children and ex-husband following a painful stint in rehab. Thea may have a fondness for drink, but when she's dry she's as sharp as a razor. Forced to confront her demons on-stage after winning the role of Martha in a production of Who's Afriad of Virginia Woolf?, the decimated thespian realizes that her only hope for recovery is to reach out to the very same children she once abandoned.

Critic Reviews for Applause (Applaus)

All Critics (28) | Top Critics (17)

  • Applause offers no softening euphemisms -- but plenty of sharp humor -- in its depiction of a gifted artist struggling to reform herself as she rages against the vulnerabilities of middle age.

  • Let me say off the bat that without the transcendent performance of its star... Martin Pieter Zandvliet's drama about an allegedly recovering alcoholic trying to regain custody of her kids would add very little to the conversation.

  • Though much of Applause... feels confining and self-aggrandizing, there's no denying that you can't take your eyes off star Paprika Steen.

  • Zandvliet and Steen create an unvarnished saga of a recovering alcoholic whose acting career makes all that teetering on the edge of one-day-at-a-time very public. It is a singular performance and a deeply affecting if imperfect film.

  • As much of [Steen] as there is, you'll want more.

  • Director and co-writer Martin Pieter Zandvliet draws inspired work from Steen. You feel her every emotion.
