With a plot-free second half, it's more a $140 million pizza-and-six-pack film than a worthy contender to action classics like Face/Off or Die Hard.

Armageddon -- slick, overblown and formulaic to its core -- nevertheless amounts to this season's closest screen equivalent to an apocalyptic thrill ride.

This deeply stupid film purports to be a tender love story, a meaty action-adventure and a global disaster movie. Quite bafflingly, it often struggles to be all of these things at once.

It's schlock, sure, but it's fun schlock with good performances and good special effects and a reasonably brisk script. It pushes all the right buttons in two formulas -- action-comedy and adventure.

While there's some crater-sized flaws if you want to be nit-picky, this is Bay's finest, earnestly entertaining film and an easy crowd pleaser.

An often loud, bright, irritating and occasionally intrusive film...

The color-corrected Life magazine pictorial-style imagery and excessive use of slo-mo are far more annoying than they are easy on the eyes, and the hyperactive editing is unbearable. [Blu-ray]

It's easy to be sucked in by all the glossy, nostalgic images that flash across the screen like some sort of psychological experiment, but like most of the director's other films, most is forgettable shortly thereafter.

It's noisy, glossy, and excessive, and more than a tad simplistic -- but it's also nearly irresistible.

...this is a critic-proof crowd-pleaser that purposely intones God, Mom, and apple pie before pushing every other jingoistic, proto-patriotic button out there.

Of all the Michael Bay films out there, Armageddon is the Michael Bayest.

That said, Armageddon is still good. Well, maybe good isn't the right word. It is very entertaining and even features (gulp) a female in a sort of important role.

I must confess that at times I found myself rooting for the meteor to hit the Earth and put us all out of our misery.

This idiotic film is loud, boorish and smart enough to relish its own lunkhead bravado.

This second and much anticipated big-rock-hitting-the-earth science fiction event epic is a major disappointment.

A Godzilla-sized blockbuster -- it's an outrageous spectacle, without many brains to speak of, but its heart in the right place.

Where things fall apart are the scenes that try to put in characterisation, and, God help us, comic relief.
