The revelation here is Villeneuve, who expands on the symphonic pacing showcased last year in the drug war drama Sicario. Even though the concept of Arrival is far-out fiction, Villeneuve treats it with no less detail or urgency.

Those expecting a whiz-bang film should be prepared for a more cerebral and emotional experience, admirable for its ambition and tone, if not wholly satisfying in its payoff.

Audience Reviews for Arrival

Director Denis Villeneuve shines once again in this unique sci-fi creation. Arrival is unique for its structural narrative, bold effects and portrayal. The film's underlying look at relationships as well as prime performances from cast make for a complex, yet eye-opening piece of cinema. 4/5

Cliches aside, the film proves to be a smart thriller--and unexpectedly so. Adams is great, per usual.

I guess it doesn't take much to make an amazing movie. Just an incredibly original story by Ted Chiang, great directorial choices by Dennis Villeneuve, and a great performance from Amy Adams. The film's pragmatic approach to an alien landing really separates it from other sci-fi films, and then the story hits another gear and separates itself from all other films of any genre. A couple of pacing holes are present but can't come close to bringing this movie down. I have always believed the best films are the ones that have you thinking well after you've left the theater. This is one of those films.
