Movie Info

Health faddist Mulvain and his astrology-minded wife Salome hold court over their seven musical-prodigy daughters. Each girl is named after a mythical Greek. Athena falls in love with lawyer Adam Shaw and Minerva is ga-ga over crooner Johnny Nyle, neither of whom measure up to Mulvain's notions of perfection.

Audience Reviews for Athena

½

★★1/2 (out of four) Light and fun, but shallow musical with Edmund Purdom and Vic Damone romancing two sisters whose grandfather owns a health spa. Jane Powell and Debbie Reynolds are the sisters. There are a lot of bouncing fit babes and pumped up musclemen parading about, but the musical numbers and plot are mostly silly. Now is mostly remembered for the appearance of a young Steve Reeves as Mr. Universe. Not too bad for what it is, but could have been much better. Debbie Reynolds always kind of annoyed me. She can be great, like in "Singin' In the Rain", or too much, like in "The Mating Game". Here she is somewhere in the middle.

Middling musical filled with pretty people. Purdom was never the greatest actor but was an extremely handsome man. Jane and Debbie are bubbly and fresh as sisters. The best performance comes from the terrific Louis Calhern as the somewhat daffy grandfather. Interesting to compare Evelyn Varden's spacy Grandma here and her portrayal of the vicious Icey Spoon in the next year's Night of the Hunter. Probably the only movie, musical or otherwise that stops cold to have a Mr. Universe contest stuffed into it. Pleasant but minor.
