Clunky, bloody assassin action film misses its target.

A bland thriller with a killer cast...

Director Tate Taylor can't resist a nonstop barrage of cliches as the story slickly flits through a series of glamorous international locations.

This plays the same old song with such a lack of inventiveness that it almost feels intentional.
September 28, 2020
We've seen this movie before many times with different faces and settings, but the same ingredients. Director Tate Taylor truly has no interest in reinventing the wheel, he's happy just using everyone else's instruction manual.

Ava is a napping-on-the-couch movie through and through, with recognizable names and a sexy premise but no distinct personality.

Chastain might have a future in action films ahead of her, and I fully believe she could play a convincing action hero, but girl, this ain't it.

One of our most expressive actresses joining two of our most insistent hams in an action movie? How do you screw something like that up? Well, maybe by just stopping at the concept and calling it a day.

As the coincidences pile up and the logical gaps widen, it becomes tougher to penetrate Ava's poker-faced glare. While the rooting interest dwindles, so does the film's killer instinct.

As the plot grows increasingly convoluted and borderline laughable, Chastain is steady as she goes, playing a character who's worthy of a film franchise in a movie nowhere near deserving a sequel.

Lacks the alchemy to put Jessica Chastain in a soul-baring Narcotics Anonymous meeting alongside Jessica Chastain shooting up a bunch of German soldiers while wearing a long red evening gown.

Such listless VOD junk the only surprise is that Bruce Willis isn't in it.
September 24, 2020
Ava fumbles its attempt to mix the standard globetrotting assassin formula with an intense family drama. Jessica Chastain does a lot of heavy lifting to no avail.
September 22, 2020
By the end of the movie, Ava comes across less like a feature film and more like a weak pilot for a show that never got picked up to series.
September 21, 2020
isn't only banal, but also, in its half-hearted stabs at novel ideas, seemingly content with its banality.
September 17, 2020
Despite bolstering an acclaimed cast and worthwhile aspirations, Ava mostly operates as a bewildering misfire.
September 16, 2020
[Ava] falls back on too many familiar genre cliches to truly set itself apart.
August 31, 2020
Adding nothing to the assassin-thriller genre, Ava is a movie that cant rise above its dull script no matter how seriously it takes itself.

Matthew Newton's skimpy, dial-a-cliché script makes the whole enterprise feel more like a mid-range series pilot than a major star vehicle.
August 25, 2020
Were Ava just a generic action thriller it'd be difficult to recommend thanks to its litany of clichés, tortuously dull plot, and stale action which sometimes reaches a "Liam Neeson climbing a fence in Taken 3" level of editing by Zach Staenberg.
