The opening card of this classic female melodrama sets the sardonic theme wonderfully: "Back in the good 'ole days, before women were given the right to vote..." Of course what follows is a male fantasy rife with ego, domineering, and emotional blackmail all told from the perspective of Dunne's character. In the 'good ole days' before suffrage, she must rely on hand-outs, both financial and emotional, from powerful men to feel as though she has any power herself.
