With all the hype about this film, one may expect a dark, cynical comedy with some sort of commentary on the mass consumerism of the season. Sadly, moments like that are few.

If Bad Santa does well at the box office, Zwigoff will get credit for being a savvy player. That Bad Santa is as vile and stupid as Ghost World was insightful and touching is something Hollywood has no interest in measuring.

There are laughs along the way. But too many of them are the sort that send you out into the cold worrying for your own humanity.

Despite funny moments, the best efforts of Thornton and Cox, and top-notch support from John Ritter and Bernie Mac, it runs out of steam and becomes just unpleasant.

John Ritter's final film is a sad reminder of how the double entendres of Three's Company have now been replaced by flagrant, in-your face fouls.

The script may not be too smart, but its well paced with the gags flying thick and fast.

This is a Christmas film like few that have ever been made, and it certainly gets points for originality, but it is mean-spirited, repetitious, and not very funny.

It rides a one-trick reindeer that tires well before the second reel, and it mistakes crudity and cruelty for humour.

While often insanely funny, Bad Santa is a one-joke movie, and it oversells that joke.

Fails miserably because Thornton's character is so woefully underwritten that his shtick becomes frustratingly tiresome after about 20 minutes.

At the end of 'Bad Santa,' redemption comes for its foul-mouthed main character -- but not for the movie itself.

When will people tire of these one-note comedies? If you've seen the poster, there's really no need to actually sit through the movie.

There simply aren't enough laughs in this Christmas comedy -- it's more like a stocking stuffed with lumps of coal.

As toilet-mouthed, puke-encrusted, and liver-damaged as it may be, the movie's a traditional Scrooge story at heart.
