Tuesday, September 28, 2010 (1990) Wild Search (In Chinese with English subtitles) This is a Chinese version of Peter Weir's "Witness" starring Harrison Ford, but this time starring Chow Yun Fat and Cherie Chung as the love interest. When upon watching this film without seeing the original source still can hold up quite well because the setting is different whereas in Witness, Harrison Ford hides out amongst Amish people protecting a young kid, in Wild Search Chow Yun Fat hides out amongst the countryside protecting a little girl who witnesses her mothers murder! Directed by Ringo Lam and because it was made in Hong Kong, this film has more tension and more action than "Witness" where the people that're chasing them serves as sort of a backdrop for the rapport between Harrison Ford and the Amish! 3 out of 4

Ringo Lam is often compared to John Woo because both of them features Chow Yun Fat in so many films, but their interests are, I think, different - While Woo is more interested in direction of gunfight and aesthetic of a man, Ringo Lam originally is more into showing human drama. Yun Fat can play so many kind of role, and it is his ability as an actor, but he is also blessed with so many talented directors who can get so many faces out of him. Although I said Yun Fat can play so many types of characters, he is Chow Yun Fat before he is the character in a movie, and that's why he is such a big star and loved by so much people. In this film, he shows great performance not only as the usual role of a hard-boiled cop but also a man who overcomes loss of his wife and daughter by meeting a woman who is the sister of a killed-suspect. Cherie Chung plays the heroin nicely, and the chemistry between Yun Fat and Cherie Chung is exquisite. Indeed, they two plays hero and heroin in so many movies. The rhythm os storytelling is good, too. A very fine Hong Kong film.

Like this one, contemporary love/action movie. Chow and Cherie cannot be more matching, simple but moving.
