Movie Info

Acclaimed filmmaker Barry Levinson recounts the dedicated efforts of a devoted marching band to support their hometown football team at all costs. It was during a chilly March night in 1984 that Baltimore Colts owner Robert Irsay made the rash decision to move his team to Indianapolis, and when the fans awoke the following morning that could barely believe the news. Realizing that they were facing the biggest challenge of their careers, the members of the team's volunteer marching band made it their mission to help build up a team that Baltimore football fans could truly be proud of.

While it had good intentions, I thought this film could have been much better. While the band was something quite interesting, I think the bigger story would have been doing a film specifically on the Colts leaving at the dead of night en route to Indianapolis. While it is something I am too young to remember, every person who has been exposed to NFL lore knows of the Mayflower trucks and the Colts fans left holding the bag. The band itself that performed at Colts games and later Ravens games was not as interesting as the struggle between Robert Irsay and the city of Baltimore and I think Levinson would have a better film if he focused on that. Then again, that angle might have been too painful to explore for a true blue Baltimore native like Levinson.
