An interesting but lackluster film better left to the small screen.
How you feel about the odd little documentary Barefoot to Timbuktu will depend to an unusually large extent on how you feel about its subject.
Like a good after-dinner story, the film's charm comes from casual storytelling, enhanced by gently barbed interviews with Aebi's family and ex-wife.
The result is oddly lackluster.
Captivating, inspirational and profoundly illuminating. It's a life-affirming celebration of compassion, hope, persistence and generosity of heart.
An appealing documentary about a larger-than-life adventurer, artist, entrepreneur, and social activist in a settlement in the middle of the Sahara.
Who knows how many people know who Aebi is or about his selfless efforts, but it's inspiring to watch and Martina Egl has done a good job finding an inventively artistic way of telling his story.
