Movie Info

Provocative, funny and profoundly moving, Bastardy is the inspirational story of a self proclaimed Robin Hood of the streets. For Forty years and with infectious humour and optimism, Jack Charles has juggled a life of crime with another successful career- acting. Filmmaker Amiel Courtin-Wilson follows Jack over seven years, gradually blurring the line between director and accomplice as Jack continually traverses the criminal and acting worlds. However the law finally catches up with Jack and when he faces a jail sentence he is forced to decide if he can go straight for the first time in his life.

Critic Reviews for Bastardy

All Critics (3)

  • Turns the city's landscape and cultural memory upside down as it tracks the life of the Indigenous stage and screen actor Jack Charles (The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith), who was also gay, a cat burglar, and a long-term heroin addict.

  • Courtin-Wilson's approach is graceful, impressionistic and with the heart of a poet.

  • As a portrait of a damaged man, ravaged by substance abuse and poorly exploiting the natural gifts bestowed upon him, the film is insightful, personal and candid.
