Movie Info

Stage manager Rachel Gurner (Hannah Pearl Utt) still lives in her childhood apartment above the theater her family owns and operates in New York City. Level-headed Rachel is the only thing standing between her family -- her off-kilter actress sister Jackie (Jen Tullock), her eccentric playwright father Mel (Mandy Patinkin), and her deadpan preteen niece Dodge (Oona Yaffe) -- and utter chaos. Then, in the wake of a sudden family tragedy, Rachel and Jackie learn their presumed-deceased mother (Judith Light) is not just alive but thriving as a soap-opera star. Also starring Mike Colter and Alec Baldwin.

  • The dialogue is clever and the premise witty. It's a New York-y film that has the zip of a farce, without all the nuttiness. (There's a little nuttiness.)

  • A charming and quirky New York tale, if a bit disorganized, finding its voice when it quiets down to just listen to the three women at the center of the story.

  • "Before You Know It" isn't without its moments, but it could have used more of them. Sometimes it's a slog.

  • "Before You Know It" isn't a deep movie, or a hilarious one, and Utt and Tullock probably don't expect it to be. But it is, in its undemanding, almost effortless way, warm and wise and watchable enough to be just this side of wonderful.

    Sep 4, 2019 | Rating: 2.5/4 | Full Review…
  • Before You Know It shifts seamlessly from quirky to sad to mysterious to wacky to surreal within just the space of a few days, so much so that you'd never know it's director Hannah Pearl Utt's feature filmmaking debut.

    Aug 30, 2019 | Rating: 3/4 | Full Review…
  • Wise, witty, and richly specific in its evocation of a family limping along on a wobbly foundation of secrets and lies.
