"Believer"... [is] ultimately about a straight, white, married father of three who wants to have it all ways - to be seen by his worldwide fans as an enlightened and empathetic rock star while remaining faithful to his church.
Reynolds seems to push Believer towards sharing the spotlight by bringing in other voices; in so doing, he shows viewers exactly what the role of a good ally is.
Believer and its headliner hit all the right notes, in a film that delivers another kind of thunder.
[A] fine, rousing, often touching film...
A better doc would have used its superstar lead as a linchpin, structuring it so that he's absorbed into the cause, gradually upstaged by those directly affected by sanctioned bigotry.
As a movie it's OK, with very little worth raving about. As a story and message, though, it feels important and worth getting out there ...
This isn't a great documentary, but Reynolds deserves applause and respect for getting his message of tolerance to Mormon youth.
It's well-intentioned and occasionally moving, but hard to talk about without confronting its flaws.
HBO's genuinely moving Believer puts an attractive bow tie on the observance of Pride month, laying bare the ostracization of (and embarrassingly slow progress for) the Mormon Church's queer community.
Dan Reynolds, frontman of the group Imagine Dragons, acts like he deserves a big pat on the back for not adhering to the discriminatory policies of the Mormon Church in which he was raised.
Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons shows humility and heart in this moving doc.
