As to Gene Tierney, the spirited Belle, it is a thousand pities that she remained undiscovered during the search for the perfect Scarlett O'Hara. Go to Full Review

The questionable narrative is not all that's wrong with this production, as a miscast Gene Tierney is too delicate an actress to pass for a gunslinger. Go to Full Review

RANDOLPH GREAT SCOTT as 'Confederate' make this worth watching. But BARELY if at all 'based on a true story'. 1st, SAM STARR was a long-bearded UNION general in the Civil War. Belle married SAM STARR, an outlaw, in 1880,long after Civil War. DAND ANDREWS AS Union officer. & CHILL WILLS. And almost nothing in this film about BELLE Starr's years with criminals. Also, a movie today could not be made which showed 'both sides North & South fought for what they believed was right'. & this movie could be criticized as portraying plantations & happy loyal slaves & Confederates at all sympathetically & not totally villainous. But with the nation still trying to heal after the Civil War ended just 75 years before, and with WW2 on the horizon, movies like this helped to foster a unity of North and South essential to fighting the Axis. ALSO in another somewhat similar 1940 movie, NEVADA CITY, RANDOLPH SCOTT looked 'marvelously perfect' in wrinkle free Confederate uniform. And the Tearjerker ending also Tearjerker, but false. Watched on the movie channel 1,13,2022, when posted this to RT, i gave 3 1/2 RT Stars. See more 12/30/2012 Gene Tierney as a bandit queen? Although miscast, it's kind of fun to see gorgeous Tierney in a very non-typical role. It's unfortunately a pretty slow moving film, but Tierney and Randolph Scott make it watchable See more 04/11/2012 a little hollywood re-visionist history writing with this "bio-pic" See more Read all reviews
