Some shorts you can get a picture of with a single line. This one's Stan and Ollie, playing close to home as "a big-time vaudeville act", on a train - the idea being this is exactly the kind of confined space in which the duo can create maximum chaos... You can probably imagine what will happen when the pair attempt to clamber onto a top bunk together, although the naturalness of the dialogue ("Why didn't you get another berth?" "It was the only one they had") comes as a surprise this early into the sound era, and the tetchiness, that of two brothers obliged to share a bedroom against their will, somehow feels less forced or constructed than it does in many other L&H shorts. The clincher is the secondary running gag: the train of events set into motion by Stan's innocent walking-in on a female passenger in a state of undress, which results in the occupants of an entire carriage forcibly divesting one another.

The worst of the Laurel and Hardy movies I've seen. This one is more boring and annoying than funny.

Lovely Laurel and Hardy short film, the two men travel on a train and cause all sorts of upset. The scenes with them trying to settle into a train berth are very funny...

Stayed in last night and watched three movies: all 20 mins Laurel and Hardy classics. This was the first; not one of their best perhaps but there are a few laugh out loud points. How often can you say that about a modern comedy film? The berth of the title is a cramped top bunk on a sleeper train that our heroes have to try and share. HT
