Movie Info

It's been 20 years since documentarian Ira Wohl trained his cameras on his mentally retarded cousin "Philly" as he struggled to carve out some independence from his sequestered life in his parents' home. Philly, now in his late sixties, resides in a group home in Queens, New York, where he takes classes and is loved by family and friends. Now, he travels to Los Angeles to visit his cousin Ira and prepare for his bar mitzvah.

Audience Reviews for Best Man

A great doc. Both this and Best Boy are amazing in the way Wohl makes the viewer absolutely love his subjects. I was worried that there wouldn't be the family aspect, but did I ever get a kick out of Fran, it was like seeing Pearl all over again. A truly great film and very important in showing people who may not know about the mentally handicapped what it's really like and how Philly has lived a truly wonderful life.
