Bichunmoo(Details here),was released in 2000 and heralded the beginning of the boom in Korean cinema, along with the hugely acclaimed ‚??The Warrior‚??. Boasting unique fight scenes as well as a deeply seated drama, this film surely has much to offer.
A low class boy falls in love, the entire country is in upheaval and their love cannot blossom. Finding out about his heritage and the impossibilities surrounding his hearts choices, an epic tale of violence, drama and love blooms.
Editing in this film is exceptional, the juxtaposition of shots is absolutely beautiful, providing great meaning to each shot. Whilst the action scenes are overcut sometimes, they are still choreographed with immense skill, and posses a unique quality not seen in other films.
Power and drama stem from all aspects of this film, with highly well constructed central characters, even if the others are cliché, the core are mesmeric in their delivery and hold the camera well, especially with the assuredly competent direction, even if it does linger too much on certain shots.
The downsides of the film however are clearly apparent, the music is most poorly selected, feeling exceedingly out of character with the content of the film. Sometimes the dialogue dips in quality, which is overly noticeable as well as effects that now appear dated from time to time.
Overall, Bichunmoo is a strong drama, the fantasy elements make more depth and symbolism, creating a deeper and more enduring meaning, unfortunately many audiences will find themselves distanced from the movie due to the cultural barrier and unusual surrealist elements portrayed in a semi-realistic setting. A movie which definitely has much to offer certain viewers but definitely not one for all. True fans of cinema should give it a watch, and fans of Korean film will find this unmissable.
A touching story about true love for drama fans and great visuals. Maybe the story is a little bit confusing if you watch it for the first time but the action and visuals keep you interested.
If you watch it for the second time it all becomes clear and satisfying. This movie deserves multiple viewing.
It's an enrichment for my collection. Watch it and enjoy. Beautiful ! ! !
Soundtrack... hmm... I understand what they tried to do with it (modern, different from other similar movies, etc) but all those rock and disco tracks kind of ruin the movie atmosphere, I think.
