Critic Reviews for Bicycling with Moliere
For Francophiles of a literary bent, just hearing these two actors silkily unfurling their lines will be frisson enough
This may be a buddy comedy on its surface, but "Bicycling With Molière" also gives some insight into the way art imitates life, and also the way life informs art.
It deals lightly with topics like ego, friendship, rivalry and love, and it does so within the context of an exploration of the personal and professional lives of a pair of actors.
As long as it's putting Moliere through a Pirandellian prism, Bicycling With Moliere is sophisticated fun.
An amiable French buddy comedy, "Bicycling With Molière" is worth a ride.
Audience Reviews for Bicycling with Moliere
The depressed, uneven, tightly-wound Serge is expertly played by Luchini. For his performance alone, this film is worth watching. The tormented and tormentor lies under the skin of this frail framed, pale-blue eyed man. Particularly when he breaks in an open and cloudless smile. Compared with him, all others fail to match up his bottled-up intensity of loving and hating humans with such equal measure. The theatrical rehearsal of Moliere's Le Misantrope is quite a treat itself. But the comedy in this film comes in the failed attempt to save the artistic soul of a happy little porn star.
An amiable movie that stays a bit too long. The performances are solid, but not special. There are a number of good laughs but the few attempts at physical humor fall flat (in an unfunny way). The women are reliably attractive and accommodating; as one expects in French cinema.
A light and charming comedy that may be a bit irregular and not very well focused but has some nice dialogue and good moments of humor - and along the rehearsal of Molière's work by the leads we are given a decent exploration of the nuances in the interaction between them.
