The movie is a knockout.

Since the movie is set in the decades before Escobar's prime, it lacks the kind of narco sheen western audiences have flocked to, but it's very much an analogy for that era, the lives it took and the shame it's left behind for the survivors.

Harrowing in its repetitive violence, but never less than fascinating as a piece of ethnology, with magic-realist dimensions, that amounts to an origin story of the Latin American drug trade. It's an extraordinarily accomplished piece of filmmaking.

"Birds of Passage" is a standout in the sprawling drug-empire genre, showing the effects of the trade on locals and refusing to romanticize the family at its center.

Imagine "The Godfather" made by dazzling Latin American directors who combine bravura filmmaking with political awareness and a probing social conscience.

Three viewings in, I'm still flabbergasted by the scope and detail of this movie ... and in awe of the way its unique cover version of a crime-doesn't-pay story totally pays off.

Unique background elements provide flavor, but apart from the drug of choice here being marijuana rather than cocaine, what unfolds could hardly be less rote.

The ease and charisma of the performers, trained and nonprofessional actors alike, heighten the emotional impact.

The screenwriters' way of describing this world's fall from grace due to the lures of money and luxury has the power and inevitability of classic tragedy.

Richly textured images both unfold the action in tense detail and enmesh it in its social context, rescuing cultural memory from tragic devastation.

Outstanding.... "Birds of Passage" is closer in tone to "Narcos" than any telenovela.... Gallego and Guerra keep the story consistently absorbing as the action plays out and the bodies pile up.

The impact of modern vice upon the Wayuu is a captivating tale never told before, and the final few minutes are brutal in the best possible way.

You feel for these fathers, mothers and children as they endure their mythic rise and fall, but the ruthless, eternal cycle of violence begetting violence leaves no room for sentimentality.

A beautifully crafted, slow-burn crime saga steeped in native traditions.

A visually stunning and often surprising true story that charts the rise of the Colombian drug business back before Escobar from its unexpected roots, among an indigenous clan in way over their heads.
